The key submission details are as follows:

• Open to youth directors from the Asia-Pacific countries/regions (Aged 18 - 40)

• Internal pre-screening will be conducted for micro movies from each country/region

• Deadline for submission: 15 September 2026

• Upload micro movies to the drive with a link available for downloading and submit the File link by email address at: apymmf@jcihk.org, address To: "APYMMF2026 Micro Movie Submission"

• File shall contain Micro movie, poster, subtitles, Submission application, contact information, cast, introduction, brief summary of the content, creative concept, etc. that are related to the micro movie

• No entry fees

 

Micro Movie requirements:

• Maximum length: 20 minutes or less

• Video format: FHD (1920 x 1080p) or above, QHD or UHD is preferred, PAL format, 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio or any other suitable aspect ratio, minimum 720p resolution, H.264 or Apple ProRes 422 HQ codec, minimum 5 Mbps bitrate, MOV or MP4 container (DCP format required for traditional cinemas)

• English subtitles are required for all micro movies. Subtitles are required to be provided as a separate file with timestamp. (Optional to include Chinese subtitles)

• Compliance with the Film Censorship Ordinance (Chapter 392 of the laws of Hong Kong) and the Film Censorship Authority of Hong Kong: https://www.ofnaa.gov.hk/en/services/film_division/film_classification/index.html 

 

Prizes for selected Micro movie(s):

• Priority will be given to award-winning works from local and international competitions, with a maximum of two submissions per country/region.

• The selected directors/producers will be invited to attend and provide a sharing session at the Asia-Pacific Youth Micro Movies Festival, and will receive a trophy in recognition of their achievement. The format of the event maybe in person or online depends on the final arrangement of the organizing committee.

Evaluation Criteria

All submitted entries will go through an initial internal review. The judges will evaluate each work based on the following criteria:

1. Content & Theme (50%)

Judging criteria: Core narrative, Depth in relation to the theme, Narrative structure and innovative element

​

Relevance to the theme

• Does the work strictly align with the theme or convey a clear core value?

• Does the content reflect the relevant cultural background or social reality? Does it possess positive social value?

• Government alignment: Assess whether the content aligns with targeted public advocacy goals.

Innovation and originality

• Is the subject matter or perspective novel? Does it break through traditional narrative frameworks?

• Does it feature a unique angle or plot twist? Is the twist placed logically to enhance dramatic tension?

​

Narrative Structure and pacing

• Dramatic arc: Is the opening engaging? Does the story progress smoothly? Are the climax and ending logical, compelling, and emotionally impactful?

• Pacing control: Is the narrative tight and balanced, avoiding both unnecessary drag and rushed progression?

Emotion and resonance

• Does it evoke emotional resonance (e.g., moving, thought-provoking or surprising)?

• Does the thematic depth extend beyond the narrative to touch on social, huma, or cultural levels?

 

2. Filmmaking technique (30%)

Judging criteria: Visual language, technical execution, and artistic expression

 

Composition and camerawork

• Is the composition aesthetically pleasing and intentional (e.g., symmetry, blank or visual focal points)?

• Are camera movements (e.g., pans, tilts, zooms or tracking) smooth and supportive of the narrative?

• Is camera placement appropriate (e.g., point-of-view shots to enhance immersion)?

Visual effects and post-production

• Color grading: Does the color palette fit the theme (e.g., cool tones conveying alienation, while warm tones evoking intimacy)?

• Image quality: Are resolution and lighting handled professionally, free from overexposure or visual noise?

• Do post-production elements (e.g., visual effects, subtitles) feel natural and enhance the viewing experience?

Editing and sound design

• Is the editing fluid? Are transitions (e.g., hard cuts, fades) used appropriately?

• Does the visual rhythm match the narrative pacing without jarring jump cuts or unnecessary dragging?

• Sound design: Do the score, sound effects and ambient noise heighten the atmosphere? Are dialogue and volume levels properly balanced?

 

3. Acting & Performance (20%)

Judging criteria: Performance authenticity, characterization and Ensemble synergy

 

Acting quality

• Do the actors accurately convey their characters' emotions and personalities? Is the performance natural rather than stiff?

• Is line delivery clear and appropriate (e.g., language choice and tone matching the character profile)?

Character fit and interaction

• Do the actors' appearance and demeanor suit their roles?

• Is there strong chemistry and dynamic interaction between actors (e.g., natural rapport, believable conflict)?

Nuance and detail

• Do subtle facial expressions and physical gestures add depth to the characters?

• Does the acting enhance the narrative's credibility, especially during key emotional turning points?

Prohibited Content:

• Any micro movie element that is considered controversial, such as explicit sexual content, violation of human rights, religious intolerance, or excessive violence, is strictly prohibited.

• Any movies created or generated by Al will not be accepted.

• Participants must ensure that they hold the necessary copyrights and permissions for all elements used in their films, including music, images, and other copyrighted material.
